Options

written by Ikhwan Jamaludin (respond to 'Freedom and Choice' handout)

Determination can be done if we have an option to choose. If there is an option to choose, of course, we must want to choose something that better than the other option. However, what if we do not have an option to choose, and even worse we force to choose the only option that we have? Everyone has a right to choose and we are free to choose in our life as a right of freedom. I like to respond with the handout given by Professor Perry titled' Freedom and Choice' where he stated that, choice and freedom is not equal. He also relates that freedom is not equal only to choice but it is also not equal to work. After I read this article, I realized that there is a different between 'free to choose' and 'force to choose'. Options are just a medium between 'determinations' and 'choose'. In this medium, the distinction is occurred in a 'choose' side, where we are not always free to choose, instead sometimes we are forced to choose even we have an option. It means every choice that we have is seem to be not completely free to choose and also not completely forced to choose. Let relates back to choice and work. For example, if we work as a cashier in a restaurant or let say we work in a five star hotel restaurant and we have an option to work as waiter or waitress but, we are not interest to it because it is not that what we wish to do and we do not like to do that particularly job. In the other case, we do not have any other jobs option instead of being unemployment with no pocket money. Moreover, it is hard to find any other jobs at this circumstance. In this situation, we do have a right of 'free to choose' but we are not completely have it likewise we are 'forced to choose'. We are able to do other work but we do not have an option that is similar in what we able to do. So, it is clearly stated, the differences between 'free choosing' and 'forced choosing'. We still have a right to choose as well as free choosing but there also forced choosing in it. In the process of choosing, determination will take place and it depends to the person who has right and freedom to choose.

Like what Ikhwan wrote "if there is an option to choose, of course, we must want to choose something that better than other option. I agree with that. Certainly, people always want the best thing for themselves. However, we always could not get what we want. Freedom not same as choice, it is like two different things probably bit similar but still not same. It is true that we always free to choose but sometimes in our life we were force to choose an option that we don't want to. It is not easy for us to choose and decide on something. For me, choice is like a right for us. We are free to choose what we want to do in our life. Just like work, we are free to choose what kind of job that we want but sometimes the competitions are too high and we didn't get it and we got another job but it is not the job that we wished for, but in this situation we are force to choose as we don't have any better option. Life is always about choosing the wise decision. Whether we like it or not, sometimes our choice is not what we dream of but as long we could live on our life it won't be a matter.

I agree with Ikhwan in some sort of way. But here is my summarization about his article and my own opinions. It typically comes to us that whenever we want to make a decision, we must to think wisely about the decision that we are going to make whether it's going to result in a good or bad consequences. In decision making, sometimes we have a variety of choices to pick from; sometimes we have only a few options to take into account; and sometimes we do not necessarily have any other alternative than this one or such choice that would neither bring satisfactory results nor harm conditions to ourselves. Now, think about these two types of categories of choosing; free choosing and force choosing. Actually, in my opinion, either one or both of these two choices should bring any overall impact to our decisions if they are not being practically applied with what I would say judiciously. Let's say if right now one really needs money in order for him to buy foods to survive and to purchase any other important stuff to live likes a normal person does, and the only option he/she got is to work at a fast food restaurant, would you consider that force kind of choosing is something that one should feel unhappy about it. Yes, one should if he/she has other better options, but supposedly not, as the only plausible reason that I can think about is because one doesn't has a great academic's background to push him forward to work in better and all around job. If one consent to the reality which to work at a fast food restaurant is the one job that he/she deserves, then, I'm pretty sure the decision that one makes would bring an enormous virtues to himself/herself.
